Cartilage lesions can develop due to congenital predisposition, increased strain on the body, or injuries. Thanks to the latest surgical procedures, we do not need to forever impede our daily activities by narrowing the pain and movement range.
Natural aging of the body, just like all our components, can damage cartilage tissue, speeding up the process if there is a genetic predisposition. In addition, injuries, possible traces of previous diseases may be the cause of cartilage wear, which are called secondary wear. Deformity of the hip and knee joints is a very common disease, in both cases pain, difficulty moving can draw attention to trouble. For example, it can become difficult to get up in the morning, take the stairs, walk, lift. Initially, you can relieve complaints of physiotherapy, the doctor may also prescribe nonsteroidal analgesics and anti-inflammatories, recommend steroid or cartilage regenerating injections.
First, the diagnosis is made on the basis of an imaging examination. Then, an immediate start of treatment is essential in order to improve the chances of recovery. At the same time, serious lesions and abrasions of the articular cartilage surfaces typically do not heal, because the cartilage is no longer able to regenerate itself, so surgical intervention may be required.
Among other things, a special cartilage surface training procedure, called mosaic surgery, was developed and introduced into clinical practice by our medical director, Prof. László Hangody. Many people are afraid of surgical interventions, even though modern medical procedures allow for more options for regeneration of cartilage surfaces, even with very short recovery time. Implanting an arthritic prosthesis may not be the solution.
What do we do?
The doctor responds – Prof. Dr. László Hangody, Medical Director of Dr. Rose Private Hospital, Orthopedic Physician, Accident Surgeon, MTA Doctor, Professor, Academic
At Dr. Rose Private Hospital, we use a variety of cartilage surface training techniques for the treatment of cartilage defects of different dimensions, depths and types. If we can find high-quality glass cartilage in the joint, we can solve the cartilage supplementation without implanting foreign matter, this is called mosaic surgery.
In fact, on certain non-incriminating surfaces of the joint, there are still enough intact joint surfaces, so that cartilage with a small cylindrical bone base cut out of them can be mosaicised into the site of the damaged cartilage. Over time, these tissue islands are able to reproduce the still-empty parts. It is also possible to transplant cartilage from a non-own organism, which is a solution for cartilage damage even in the case of large or deep cartilage bone defects.
Another procedure is the formation of cartilage surfaces with a biodegradable (degradable) skeletal structure, in which case the material implanted into the body produces tissue in its place over time. Surgery is made even more effective by the fact that, in some of the procedures, stem cell concentrations from the patient's own bone marrow can be used during surgery.
