Alan Tyndall  is professor and head of the department of rheumatology in the University of Basel since 1991. He is a graduate from the University of Sydney, Australia and completed his clinical and research training in internal medicine and rheumatology and research in Sydney , Canberra and London.

Current special interests include hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in autoimmune diseases,  mesenchymal stem cells in autoimmune disease, systemic sclerosis, infections and TNF alpha blockade and osteoporosis.

He currently serves as chairman of the EULAR Standing Committee for Clinical Affairs (ESCCA), secretary of the EULAR Scleroderma Trials and Research (EUSTAR) group and is acting chair for three NIH safety committees for stem cell trials.

Prof Tyndall has published over 140 peer reviewed articles  and 20 book chapters, many of which relate to stem cell application in autoimmune diseases.
